The term, pH refers to the potential of hydrogen which is a measure of the hydrogen ion (H+) concentration and also a measure of acidity or alkalinity. The pH scale ranges from 0 on the acidic side to 14 on the alkaline side. A solution is neutral if the pH is 7. The pH scale is logarithmic, so a change of one pH unit indicates a tenfold shift in the concentration of hydrogen ions. For example: a pH of 6 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 7, and it is 100 times more acidic than a pH of 8. You can see how a slight shift in pH can be quite significant. In the human body, pH is critical especially in your blood. The pH range that is considered to be normal for blood is between 7.30 and 7.45. Blood pH is a direct indicator of how much oxygen is available for your cells. Blood at a pH of 7.45 contains 65% more excess oxygen than blood at a pH of 7.3.4 Lack of oxygen and the resulting metabolic acidosis is a component of just about every disease we know. Nobel prize-winning research in the 1930s and 1940s by Dr. Otto Warburg revealed that cancer could not live in an oxygen-rich environment. His research provided evidence that oxygen-starved cells switch to another mechanism for producing energy one that does not require oxygen and one that is capable of surviving in an acidic environment.5 Since his original research, most disease has been linked with the lack of oxygen and the build-up of acidic wastes. Blood with a pH of 7.3 is also thicker than blood with a more alkaline pH. Acid is partially responsible for blood clotting. A lower blood pH means thicker blood that is more difficult to pump. Both dehydration6 and low blood pH are now linked with high blood pressure. In today s world, most people s bodies and blood are more acidic than they should be. This is the result of poor diet (heavy in sugar, soft drinks, excessive protein, and refined carbohydrates), dehydration, stress, and environmental pollutants. Each of these contributes to acidosis and unfortunately also to disease and premature aging. Besides the consequences mentioned above, acidosis reduces your body’s ability to absorb minerals and nutrients. It reduces energy production and slows cellular regeneration. Acidosis is responsible for hardening of the arteries and it makes you more susceptible to fatigue and illness. In an overly acidic body, maintaining normal blood pH is difficult; sometimes your body has no choice but to pull alkaline minerals from organs and tissues including bones and teeth. When water is ionized, alkaline minerals (with a positive charge) are attracted to the negative charge on the hydroxyl ion (OH-) and are concentrated on one side of the ionization chamber producing what is referred to as alkaline water. Alkaline water has a pH that is between 10 and 1000 times more alkaline than the starting water, depending on the minerals in the original water and on the pH setting you choose. WHAT IS IONIZED WATER?

In 1994 I went to Japan with a group of doctors to study acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. During the course of our study, we spent time in several hospitals. That s where I received my introduction to ionized water. I witnessed a man being treated for gangrene. The majority of his treatment was soaking his feet and lower legs for 30 minutes, three times a day in ionized water. He was also drinking about six quarts of alkaline, ionized water. In just three days, I watched what I considered to be a near miracle. His wounds went from foul-smelling, gangrenous sores to pink tissues that were well on their way to being healed. Japanese doctors in the hospitals we visited were also routinely using ionized water to heal diabetic ulcers, bed sores, psoriasis, and eczema. Not only were patients applying the water externally, they were drinking it for these and other conditions: arthritis, diabetes, gastritis, and blood disorders. The oriental community is well aware of these kinds of benefits which have been highlighted in several public media video documentaries now available on the internet. Ionized water (also referred to as electrolyzed water) is water that has been exposed to an electric current which separates the charged particles. During ionization, positively-charged ions are drawn to the negative electrode. Negatively-charged ions are drawn to the positive electrode. Ions with a positive charge like calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium raise the pH and produce alkaline water. Oxygen Rich Water

Enagic water contains more oxygen than regular tap water. This added Oxygen varies according to the pH selected and is present in the form of alkaline hydroxide ions (OH). The body makes use of the oxygen bound in the hydroxide compound when the aspirated oxygen (O2) runs low in the blood stream. This benefit will be most apparent during exercise and physical labor. It has been written that Ionized Water “may also lower blood pressure and help the heart work less hard.” Quoted from Reverse Aging, Sang Whang. Dr. Arthur Guyton in the Textbook of Medical Physiology stated: “The first step in maintaining health is to alkalize the body. The cells of a healthy body are alkaline while the cells of a diseased body are acidic. Since our bodies do not manufacture alkalinity, we must supply the alkalinity from an outside source to keep us from being acidic and dying.” Oxygen is key to cellular health. We must keep the oxygen levels around our cells and in the blood at good levels. Acidic fluids cannot hold dissolve oxygen very well. We need alkaline fluids in our bodies to hold the oxygen. Technically speaking, the H+ atoms in an acid combine with the oxygen to form H20 (water). So the oxygen tends to neutralize the acid (uses up the H+ found in acid) but it also uses up the oxygen so that it is not available for cellular metabolism. However, alkaline fluids can hold dissolved oxygen, which is why the blood has to be slightly alkaline to carry oxygen to our cells. “Disease can not survive in an alkaline fluid. Oxygen rich alkaline body fluids are more capable of killing viruses.” There is a constant interplay of the pH of the fluids inside the cell and the fluids outside the cell. Normally, the pH of a cell is 6.5 or higher and the sugar glucose is broken down into nucleotides, which are the basic building blocs of DNA (the basic blue print of the body). If, on the other hand, the fluids inside a cell become too acidic (pH of 6.0 rather than the normal 6.5) the sugar glucose molecule breaks in half forming two lactic acid molecules which make the inside of the cell even more acidic. {1} “This is probably the main reason why acidosis results in degenerative diseases, and why raising the body’s fluid pH can result in curing the disease.” Moreover, with the capillary blood vessels clogged up, the function of every organ in the human body accumulating acidic waste will begin to deteriorate, causing serious illnesses in the long run. So when does the accumulation of age-contributing acidic waste begin? Scientists say that aging begins when a child starts to wean. An unborn child lives on nutrients from his mother while in the womb and the body of the baby becomes alkaline, owing to the consumption of alkaline minerals. Naturally, this is due to the release of alkaline minerals from the mother. Why is pH important to our health?

“pH” comes from French, and means “per Hydrogen,” which is a measure of the amount of Hydrogen in a liquid. The term has been modernized to mean “potential hydrogen.” The pH of a liquid stands for “potential hydrogen” and is a measurement that provides an indication of the level of hydrogen in a substance. It is measured on the pH scale, which we will look at carefully also. Why is this important? Hydrogen fuels us. Hydrogen heals us. Hydrogen is our most essential nutrient. Hydrogen provides our life force! And pH equals amount of hydrogen in liquid, so it’s a measure, if you like, of available life force in a liquid. “Nothing happens in our bodies without a chemical reaction.” Proper body pH is an important factor in good health. If any substance changes from pH 7 to pH 8, it has become ten times more alkaline. Conversely, if it has changes from neutral pH 7 to pH 6, it is 10 times more acidic. As an example, a popular Cola, at pH 2.5 is almost 50,000 times more acidic than neutral water, and needs 32 glasses of neutral (pH 7) water to counteract the consumption of one glass of Cola. (Active ingredient: Phosphoric Acid). You can now see that a change from the normal level 7.365 to pH 7 would mean that your blood would suddenly be around 4 times as acid as it should be. You would die from poisoning by your own blood. This is why every body system is used to supporting the correct blood pH. You can also understand from this that our blood pH can be affected at any time of the day by a myriad of events; food, drink, stress, pollution, exercise, or beneficially, by meditation, by drinking alkaline water, by deep breathing, even by being happy. The following shows the pH of several body fluids: Blood 7.37 – 7.43 Saliva 7.2 – 7.5 Bile 7.5 – 8.8 Urine 6.2 Pancreatic Secretions 7.5 -8.8 Gastric Juice 2.5 The human body has several complex systems for maintaining its critical acid and alkaline balance. Lungs breathe out increased amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) when there are excessive amounts present. When CO2 is dissolved in liquid it forms carbonic acid. The kidney eliminates acid through urine. The blood is also equipped with complex systems to maintain proper pH. It is essential that blood pH be maintained at a level of about 7.4, which is in the alkaline range. When the body is unable to maintain proper pH balance, there is danger that it will become overly acidic. Acids will then accumulate and are deposited in the body causing illness in the body. Although it is possible for the body to become overly alkaline, it is rare and usually caused by metabolic disorders. The most common condition is a tendency toward acidosis, caused by improper diet, environmental toxins, and stress. By: Dr. Dave Carpenter, ND, C. Ac., CCI 1. First thing upon waking, test your saliva with the pHydrion paper (available at most health food stores). When you get out of bed, spit in a spoon and then dip the end of a pHydrion test strip in the saliva (DO NOT PLACE THE PAPER IN YOUR MOUTH – this keeps the chemicals on the test strip out of your mouth and out of your bloodstream).  Note the color change, compare to the color guide on the container, and write down the pH number on the test log.  Do this before brushing your teeth, drinking, smoking, or even thinking of eating any food. The optimum saliva pH should be 6.8 to 7.2. 2. Next, test your first urine of the morning. This is urine that has been stored in your bladder during the night that is ready to be eliminated when you get up. You need to urinate on a strip of pHydrion paper.  Simply pass the end of the strip quickly through the stream of urine.  Note the color change and compare it to the guide on the test strip container and write down the pH number for your records.  The first urine should run optimally between a pH 6.8 to 7.2.  If your first urine pH is lower than 6.8 you are deficient in alkaline buffers and need to consume alkaline ionized water and move to a more alkaline diet rich in fresh green vegetables and fruits.  If your first urine pH is higher than 7.2 you are taking in enough alkaline buffers to neutralize the acids produced by physical, mental and emotional stress and metabolism from the day before.  To balance the pH of the urine you need to move away from acidic foods and drinks and begin ingesting liberal amounts of alkaline ionized water and electron rich green vegetables, low sugar fruits and healthy polyunsaturated fats. 3. When you can, test your second morning urine before eating any food.  The acids should be gone the second time you urinate so your urine pH should be ideally around 6.8 to 7.2.  If the pH is lower than 6.8 then you are in a state of latent tissue acidosis and you are deficient of alkaline buffers such as bicarbonate, sodium, potassium, and magnesium.  The lower pH is also indicative of a diet high in animal protein and thus an increase in the level of acids produced from metabolizing these proteins.  These acids include nitric, sulfuric, phosphoric, and uric acids.  To build your alkaline reserves consume ¾ to 1 oz. per day of alkaline ionized water per pound of body weight, and eliminate protein from dairy, beef, chicken, turkey, pork and fish from your diet to normalize pH at 6.8 to 7.2.  Eat liberal amounts of vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds, green drinks, and healthy polyunsaturated fats. These should make up at least 80% of your daily diet. 4. Another way to test your alkalizing buffer system is to eat a raw almond after testing your first saliva of the day.  Chew the raw almond up well and wait 5 minutes to repeat the saliva test. The body is largely made up of water, a medium which is biologically useful in allowing nutrients and various chemicals to be transported from place to place. This waterbased medium can have either acid or base (alkaline) properties. These acidbase properties are measured by what we call pH, and how pH affects the body is called the “pH Factor”. Is A Balance pH Important? Exceptionally important! Since most of the body is water-based (making up 50%-60% of our total body weight), the pH level (or acidbase level) has profound effects on body chemistry, health and disease. Extended pH imbalances of any kind are not well tolerated by the body. Indeed, the entire metabolic process depends on a balanced pH. The management of the “pH factor” is so important that the body has developed strict accounting procedures to monitor acidbase balances in every cell and biosystem. Fundamentally, all regulatory mechanisms (including breathing, circulation, digestion, hormonal production, etc.) serve the purpose of balancing pH, removing the normally metabolized developed acids and toxins from body tissues/systems without damage to living cells. What’s An “Acid pH”? An acid pH, or “acidosis”, is the term used to describe the imbalanced acidic condition of all our body fluids. pH is the acronym for potential hydrogen. It is a measure of the degree of saturation of the hydrogen ion in a substance or solution. H3O (hydronium ion+) is the acid element and OH- (hydroxyl ion-) is the base or alkaline element. When the H3O and OH- are out of balance, a pH meter will detect this and the reading will move above or below 7 (neutral). If one goes up the other goes down and vice versa. In the human body, a pH balancing act is continuously going on to maintain homeostasis. pH is actually an exponential scale. Every unit change in pH equals a 10-fold increase or decrease in acidity (or basicity). Thus, dropping from pH 7 to 6 is a 10-fold increase in acidity. However, dropping further to pH 5 is another 10-fold increase, or a 100-fold increase (10 x 10 = 100) in acidity from pH 7. For this reason, even minor deviations in pH around the more extreme values constitute much greater changes in acidity (or basicity) than seemingly major changes around the neutral mark.
